This month we speak with DASHING SASH! If you haven’t already tried his classes, you would have probably heard him, smelt him (in a good way) or seen him around the studio. Always helpful and generous, and a very integral part of community, we speak with him about his Pilates journey, favourite restaurants in Singapore and hobbies outside Pilates!

Hi Sash! Tell us more about you background. How did you end up on this little red dot as a Pilates instructor?

I’m from the Southern part of the Philippines, Davao City. The only city in the Philippines which was bagged the award of being one of the safest and cleanest cities in the world. I’m very proud of my city in the Philippines.

Most of the rules that we have there are similar to what you guys have here in Singapore and that’s why I feel at home in Singapore. I’ve been in the Pilates Industry for a decade now and spent 7 of it in Singapore! One reason I love being a Pilates instructor, and the challenges that go along with it, is the opportunity to connect with people.

My favourite thing about teaching Pilates is that I am able to help people improve their physical strength, flexibility, posture and mindfulness. Even when I’m tired after a long day of teaching, earning their trust and hearing that they are pain free and happier is very rewarding.

We know you’re pretty busy most days helping others lead healthier lives, how do you keep fit yourself?

I try to play badminton weekly with my friends. It helps releases my stress and keeps me feeling well, strong, motivated, enthusiastic and young!

We’ve noticed that you are quite the fashionista with your numerous bags, shoes and accessories. Where do you normally shop in Singapore?

Shopping is one of my favorite hobbies and who doesn’t love shopping anyway?!?! I usually go to Paragon and Ion to shop and look at brands that inspire and fascinate me. I also love the local designers at Cineleisure with their unique pieces.

Describe your typical weekend in Singapore!

My typical weekend in Singapore is usually spent by sleeping longer in the morning, brunching with friends and shopping. I only get the chance to rest on Sundays from work, so I make sure I get to enough rest and rejuvenate myself by sleeping longer and allowing the rest of the day to fall into place on its’ own.

I love sitting by the pool in my condo with my friends after a lie in or just enjoying good food anywhere!

On the topic of food, you are also quite the foodie. Where would you say is your favourite restaurant in Singapore.

I love chocolates and you will always find a bar or two in my bag. After all a hungry man is an angry man! There are a lot of wonderful restaurants here in Singapore that offer sumptuous meals of different cuisines but my favourite would have to be Basilico at Regent Hotel.

Which exercise in the Pilates repertoire is your favourite?

My favourite exercise is also the most challenging one for me. It would have to be Control Balance, a mat exercise. I have a love hate relationship with it. I love it because of the complexity of the exercise and how it opens up my tight lower back, hate it because it involves all the areas I’m work at, which make it so hard for me to do.
