Instructor Spotlight – Tricia Seow

Tricia

Hi Tricia, welcome to the team! Please tell us a little bit about yourself, where are you from and how long have you lived in Singapore?

Hey! I was born and raised in Singapore but lived in the San Francisco Bay area for 6 years where I graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a Bachelors’ degree in Political Economy and a minor in Music. I moved back to Singapore around 2 and a half years ago.

How did you first discover Pilates?

I first discovered Pilates in my teens. I was diagnosed with mild scoliosis and I was looking for new ways to improve my strength and do some resistance training. I took my first class with my mom here in Singapore, it was a duet session and I was immediately hooked onto the gentle, controlled yet intentional movements of Pilates. I shortly moved back to the States where I continued to practise Pilates on the reformer while I was working along with other exercises like Yoga, barre, hiking, indoor spin cycling and GYROTONIC. Pilates just became staple and there was no turning back, I just felt like my own self was uplifted when I went to classes. Not only did it improve my strength but the emphasis on breathing and mindful movement gave me a lot of clarity mentally and emotionally. It has been a ride ever since!

When Did You Decide To Become A Pilates Instructor?

After more than 7 years practicing Pilates across San Francisco and Singapore, I took the step to venture into the realm of Pilates Instructor Training. Trained by a Rehabilitative Physiotherapist STOTT Pilates Instructor-Trainer, I completed workshops in Functional Anatomy and Postural Analysis. I also completed the Merrithew STOTT Pilates Intensive Reformer course for both the Essential and Intermediate levels – trained by renowned Merrithew Lead Instructor-Trainers from Japan and Korea.

What Keeps You Inspired?

I was exposed to Instructors who taught Pilates in variety of pedagogic disciplines – such as STOTT Pilates, Balanced Body, BASI, and Fletcher Pilates. They were so creative in their ways of teaching and even how they maintained their fitness – I aspire to be like them. I would also say that my beliefs keep me grounded and inspired. I believe in Jesus, he loves us and centering myself around that has inspired me to love, live each day fully and to always be thankful.

What Piece Of Advice Would You Give To Somebody Trying Pilates For The First Time?

I would recommend to come with an open mind, be attentive to the cues from your Instructor and focus on breathing. Most importantly, enjoy every part of the process. You will be surprised with what you can come away with!

What Do You Do In Your Spare Time?

In my spare time, I am often reading, going for walks in the park and being out in nature. I enjoy a nice glass of wine from time to time!

Classical music is such a big part of my life,  I also enjoy listening to house music and the occasional rap music (…. and Justin Bieber!)

Life Motto;

“I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” John 10:10 NKJV

We See From Your Instagram That You Are Pretty Artsy. Tell Us A Little Bit About That!

I got into the art scene from my time in San Francisco. I was exposed to a number of contemporary and modern art galleries in San Francisco, LA and New York. I attended contemporary art fares and interacted with the gallerists, the artists and the collectors and that’s how the journey began. When I moved back to Singapore, I got acquainted with the local contemporary art scene here and I try to travel to international art fares when I can.

What Piece Of Advice Would You Give To An Aspiring Pilates Teacher?

Take your time to enjoy Pilates as a student FIRST and really understand what you love about it and from there try to see how that can be transitioned into being your career. Take baby steps, go to workshops to begin with and once you feel comfortable, jump into taking the courses.  Give yourself time, space and enjoy the process.
